Chronic back pain and treatment with gold bead implantation

How is chronic back pain treated?

Chronic back pain

Back pain is one of the most common pain complaints nationwide. About one in four people have recurrent lower back pain, while 11-12% have chronic back pain so severe that it affects social life as well as physical and psychological aspects of life, including the ability to go to work and carry out basic daily activities.

In our clinic, we have been treating patients with chronic back pain since 1996 using gold bead implantation with great success. The majority of our patients become permanently pain relieved or pain free after a single gold treatment. Gold bead implantation is thus one of the most effective methods against chronic back pain. The method is also used in many animal hospitals to treat joint pain in dogs and other pets.

The recommendation below is from one of our patients who was treated for severe back pain with gold implants:

Gold bead implantation has completely changed my life

“I had severe pain in my back – very severe pain. I had home care eight times a day. My pain was terrible and I had no quality of life,” says Lillian, who had surgery for a slipped disc in 2003.
The pain got worse a year and a half ago, when she was admitted to a local hospital in Denmark. “My aunt had a gold bead implantation a few years ago and recommended that I tried this treatment for my back pain. […]
Gold bead implantation has completely changed my life,” Lillian says today.

Listen to Lillian’s story in the video here.

Lillian, 52 years old

When you have suffered from recurrent or persistent back pain for more than 6 months, the condition is “chronic” by definition.

Treatment of chronic back pain is a specialist task that we handle in our clinic in Denmark. We also treat patients with long-term back pain and sciatica pain.

In this article, you can read more about chronic back pain, what it is and how it can be managed.

If you want to know more about our treatment, please read more about gold bead implantation here.

I have no back pain anymore

Just a nice feedback…
The first few days after my gold treatment, I was a little tired – BUT on the 11th of December I just felt fantastic.

I haven’t had any back pain since the 11th of December and we just had a visit from our son and daughter-in-law and our lovely grandchildren for 10 days during Christmas. I’ve danced, jumped and played with my grandchildren – well, it’s just been great.

What are the characteristics of chronic back pain?

Chronic back pain is shows by discomfort or pain in the back. This causes the muscles to get tense and the back to feel stiff. Low back pain is the most common type of back pain.

Pain can vary in severity from person to person. Most chronic back pain patients have mild to moderate pain and may be completely or partially symptom-free at times. Others have severe pain so they can’t sleep at night and pain can’t be managed by conventional pain management strategies. Specialised treatment is needed. Our doctors are experts and help hundreds of patients every year, improving quality of life and relieving pain by implanting gold bead in the back (a technique used by veterinarians in dogs and other pets since the 1980s).

Some patients with low back pain also have sciatic pain. The symptoms here is pain in one or both legs. Others have paresthesia in the seat region or down the legs.

What causes chronic back pain?

Chronic back pain is often caused by a combination of different factors. The pain may be caused by a e.g. poor posture, poor working conditions and/or osteoarthritis of the back.

Back pain and tense back muscles can be caused by:

  • Poor posture
  • Manual work
  • Repetitive work, including office work, hairdressing or blacksmithing
  • Obesity
  • Scoliosis

When the stressful conditions persist for a long period of time, the back muscles become tense and sore. It gives muscle tension, myosis and back pain.
If the pain comes from the muscle and no underlying conditions can be found (such as a herniated disc), it is very common for the back pain to come and go at first and it may even be gone for long periods. At times, the pain worsens again.

  • Back pain from tense muscles in the back cannot be diagnosed using X-ray or MRI scan. These kind og pain conditions account for up to 85% of all back problems.

I am deeply grateful

I had a lot of pain in my lower back and my pain had a negative effect on my quality of life. I had two treatments where gold beads were implanted in my back.

I have the best retirement job in the world, so I walk every day between 10 and 15 km. After my gold treatments, I never experience any back pain (only sore feet!). I sleep pretty well at night and feel just amazing thanks to the gold implants in my lower back.

I am deeply grateful for your efforts many years ago.

Many thanks, Susanne (now jumping around like a spring hare - or almost)

One of the reasons why pain becomes chronic over time is that ‘pain causes more pain’. You may think it hurts or subconsciously start to be afraid of making certain movements or use your back for lifting. This means that you might develop tender points in the back muscles and start to use the back in a way that you’re not used to.

There may also be other reasons why back pain becomes chronic. These cases can sometimes be diagnosed using a X-ray or MRI scan.

The so-called mechanical chronic back pain accounts for only 15% of all back problems and include the following causes:

  • Osteoarthritis of the spine
  • Herniated disc
  • Modic changes
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Dislocation of vertebra in the spine (spondylolisthesis)
  • Scoliosis
  • Old fracture of the spine, for example after an accident or compression fracture due to osteoporosis
  • Other rheumatic diseases, e.g. arthritis, spondylitis, Bechterew’s disease

Osteoarthritis of the back involving the discs between the vertebrae is a relatively common cause of chronic low back pain, particularly in older people. Muscle tension and myosis in the back also usually contribute to chronic pain when you have osteoarthritis of the back.

Modic changes, which are an inflammation of one or more vertebrae, are often seen on MRI scans in patients with chronic back pain. This condition causes moderate to severe back pain, which is aggravated when trying to exercise and using the back muscles.

The above pain conditions can all be treated with gold bead implantation. Gold bead implantation is done under local anaesthetic, implanting small 24-carat gold pieces around the painful joints in the back, where there might be osteoarthritis or herniated disc which might aggravate the pain. Most of our patients experience excellent effect and some become completely pain-free after a single treatment with gold beads in the back.

It's great to be able to sleep again after years of pain

I am very happy and grateful because the pain in my neck and back is gone. I can sleep at night without feeling knives and stitches in my back. It’s great getting a good night’s sleep again after years of pain. It makes my zest for life return. Have been on horseback in the beautiful autumn. From the forest hilltop overlooking the lake, both Gilvi and I sent many grateful thoughts to you at the clinic.

Merete, 59 years old

How is the pain condition diagnosed?

Back pain is subjective and personal. Sometimes, the cause of the pain can be found using X-ray or MRI scan.
Pain is by definition “chronic” when it has lasted longer than 6 months.
Both the diagnosis and treatment of chronic back pain is a specialist medical task.

The diagnosis is usually based on a combination of:

  1. Medical history and your symptoms
  2. Localisation and character of the pain
  3. Possibly radiating pain to one or both legs
  4. Findings from the back examination

An X-ray may be used to show whether there is osteoarthritis of the spine. Similarly, an MRI may be considered if the doctor suspects a slipped disc, Modic changes, spinal stenosis, malignant disease or infection of the spine.

What can maintain or worsen the back pain?

Maintaining the back pain:

Back pain can last for several years and become chronic when both muscles and joints are affected over a long period of time. The reasons may be:

  • Poor working conditions and heavy manual work.
  • Poor posture
  • Obesity
  • Osteoarthritis of the back or an old injury after a slipped disc in the spine
  • Unusual movements due to pain elsewhere in the body
  • Scoliosis (crooked back)
  • Arthritis of the spine (rheumatoid arthritis, spondylitis, Bechterew’s disease)

Gradual worsening of the back pain:

Chronic back pain can be aggravated by:

  • Physical inactivity and prolonged bed rest
  • Overloading the back with too many heavy lifts or too heavy exercise
  • Repetitive work
  • Heavy manual work
  • Modic changes in the spine – can probably aggravate chronic back pain

It was for me truly a miracle

I got gold in my neck and lower back in 1998 and have been fine ever since. You gave me my old life back. That was truly a miracle for me. Now suddenly I could do everything again, where for years I had just had pain.

Anders, 77 years old

Sudden worsening:

Sudden worsening of back pain can be a danger sign. In that case, please consult your own doctor immediately. Severe aggravation of existing chronic back pain can be caused by:

  • Herniated disc
  • Compression fracture in the spine (e.g. in osteoporosis or cancer)
  • Sudden back strain

A slipped disc is a common cause of sudden worsening of pain in both chronic back patients and people who have never had back pain before.
A slipped disc sometimes causes severe pain, requiring hospitalisation and treatment with strong painkillers. The pain typically subsides within 1-2 weeks, but real improvement is usually seen after 2-3 months.

When the herniated disc is in the lower back, the pain may radiate to one or both legs.

  • If you experience a sudden worsening of pain, pain in the groin, difficulty urinating and possibly a loss of strength in one leg with a tendency to fall, it is important that you see a doctor immediately.

What are the consequences of having chronic back pain?

Chronic back and low back pain often affects everyday life, work, family life, sleep, memory, concentration and quality of life. The more severe the pain, the greater the impact and the greater the risk that the pain might become chronic and have far-reaching consequences.

The back is used most of the day to keep the body upright so you don’t get a bad posture. When you have back pain, your physical strenght and ability to use your back is one of the first things to be affected. The ability and desire to use your back is typically affected. The pain can even affect the ability to getting out of bed in the morning, getting dressed, lifting a child, carrying groceries home from the grocery store and working in the garden. You may also have to rest in bed several times during the day because of pain.

In some cases, the patient might experience sciatica pain, which is a tingling or sleeping sensation in a leg.

Chronic back pain can also affect your ability to go to work. Chronic back pain might cause a lot of day off work because you have to rest. You might also need to change work tasks, or possibly even change job or early retirement. In the worst case, it will affect the family’s finances.

Since 1996, we have had several examples of patients those back pain has been cured or relieved after implanting gold beads along the spine. In some examples, the gold treatment has even safed the family’s finances because the patient has been able to keep his or her job efter the treatment. You will find a small selection of our success stories here.

I can sleep again without pain

Thank you very much for a wonderful and pleasant experience I had with you last Thursday, when I had gold implanted in my back. Yesterday, for the first time in about 3 years, I was able to vacuum our entire 325m2 house without breaks, and without having to lie down for the rest of the day. My back got a little tired, but I didn’t have severe aggravated pain like I used to. For the first time in over a year and a half, I slept from 11pm to 7am without having to get up 3-4 times to take pills. Getting a good night’s sleep was just amazing.

Christina, 39 years old

The treatment section below distinguishes between three treatment strategies (steps 1-3), which are categorised according to the severity and duration of back pain and the effect of previous treatments.

Each step consists of a series of treatments and recommendations that can be followed.

If Step 1 is not effective, go to Step 2, and if your pain is not significantly relieved by the treatments recommended in Step 2, go to Step 3.

How to treat mild to moderate back pain?

In patients with mild to moderate back pain lasting less than six months, pain relief can usually be achieved by the following treatments. In many cases, exercising can be a good way to relief pain in the back.

Stage 1: Mild to moderate back pain lasting less than 6 months.

Some of the therapies that can help are:

  • Exercising at home
  • Acupuncture
  • Electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
  • Physiotherapy
  • Chiropractic manipulative treatment
  • Massage
  • Painkillers
  • Weight loss
  • Yoga

Since most cases of mild to moderate back pains go away all by itself in a few weeks to a few months or can be managed by painkillers and home exercise, we recommend that you try such measures in the first place for purely economic reasons, though these therapies are certainly not the most effective.

Thus, you should be aware that the longer you have had back pain and the older you are, the less likely these treatments are to provide long-lasting pain relief. At age 50-60 years and above, back pain is often caused by osteoarthritis of the back, which is difficult to treat with the above-mentioned treatments. Gold bead implantation, on the other hand, is an effective treatment that usually provides lasting pain relief. Please, find our patients’ recommendations for gold bead implantation here.

I can't believe I have no more pain

I want to tell you how my “gold adventure” went.
It’s incredible! I have no pain anymore. When the local anaesthetic disappeared, I couldn’t sit, only lie on my side. The next morning the pain in my back was gone, the slipped disc still hurt, but it only lasted a few days, then it was ok too.
Many many thanks

Birthe, 52 years old

If your pain worsens at times, you can add stronger painkillers. The goal of the treatment is to relieve pain so much that you are able to exercise your back and avoid physical inactivity.

Back exercising is generally recommended for mild to moderate back pain. It is important that you exercise regularly for at least 3 months and that you start gently to avoid worsening the back pain. In that way, you might slowly experience pain relief Some back patients might experience good results from exercising, while others don’t get any pain relief at all, even after months of exercising. In those cases, it is important to change strategy (go to Step 2) and try more effective treatments, such as gold bead implantation.

Chiropractic manipulative treatment, acupuncture and massage can be useful in some acute situations where immediate pain relief is required, but for chronic pain conditions these treatments are rarely effective at providing long-term pain relief.
If you do not experience any significant effect, chiropractic treatment, acupuncture and massage should be limited to a maximum of 4-5 treatments, otherwise these treatments quickly become costly so the cost of the treatments does not match the effect.

I've got my quality of life back after my treatment with gold beads.

It’s amazing. I just got back from vacation. Last year, I could barely walk a mile. This year I have walked far distances every single day. It’s almost too good to be true that I no longer have any pain.

Vita, 66 years old
  • If you have had back pain for more than 6 months, or if you don’t experience any real pain relief from the therapies mentioned in Step 1, there is no reason to continue a long-term course of treatment with a therapist. These treatment will not provide long-term pain relief even with time.

Please proceed to the next step, which concerns the treatment of:

Step 2: Mild to moderate back pain lasting more than 6-12 months, or where other therapies have not provided any real long-lasting pain relief.

Ttreatment of chronic back pain lasting more than 6-12 months, or where other therapies have not provided significant or long-lasting pain relief:

  • Gold bead implantation (highest recommendation because the treatment provides long-term or permanent pain relief)
  • Electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)
  • Coping strategies (simply accept that you have chronic pain)
  • Painkillers
  • Weight loss

Gold bead implantation is generally a much more effective treatment for relieving chronic back pain than exercises, acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage, yoga and physiotherapy. We have used this technique in our clinic since 1996 and have helped thousands of patients with chronic pain.

Most of our patients treated with gold bead implantation by the doctors in our clinic experience significant pain relief or become pain-free after a single implantation of gold beads in the back. The treatment is suitable for all kinds of back pain, regardless of how long you have suffered with back pain.

How to treat chronic moderate/severe back pain?

Moderate to severe chronic back pain is almost impossible to treat with therapies such as exercise, massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and weak painkillers as the effect of these treatments is short-lived.
Thus, these therapies can only be recommended for non-chronic moderate/severe back pain lasting shorter than 3-6 months. The chances for improvement with back exercises are also limited.

  • Besides, the pain-relieving effect of back exercises is rarely convincing in patients with severe chronic back pain. However, exercising your back is important to maintain the function and strength of your back.

I have slept without waking up because of pain

Tonight is the 2nd night I have slept without waking up because of pain. I can sit and stand up from a chair without any problems. I can walk as fast as most. Today my goal is to go riding.
I’m just so happy and relieved. Thank you so much.

Vivian, 60 years old

If you don’t experience any significant pain relief from the above treatments, you should move on to the next step, which concerns treatment of moderate to severe chronic back pain:

Step 3: Treatment of moderate to severe chronic back pain.

We recommend the following treatments in patients with moderate to severe chronic back pain – with the exception of back surgery due to the risk of failed back surgery and worsening of pain after surgery.

  • Gold bead implantation (highest recommendation because the treatment provides long-term or permanent pain relief)
  • Coping strategies (simply accept that you have chronic pain)
  • Back surgery
  • Strong painkillers
  • Back exercises to maintain function
  • Weight loss
  • (acupuncture, massage, TENS, chiropractic treatment, relaxation can be used for short-term pain relief)

I am the happiest person in the world

4 weeks after my gold bead treatment 90% of my pain is gone. I am the happiest person in the world. I am so grateful to you. Before the treatment I could nearly walk 30 minutes through the city and every step with pain. Now I walk 3 hours and more without pain. Thank you very much.

Sylvia

Stronger painkillers in the form of opioids may be necessary for a period of time for severe back pain or pain exacerbation.
Long-term treatment with opioids should be avoided since there is a risk of tolerance and side effects such as constipation, impaired memory, fatigue, lethargy, dizziness and drug abuse. This type of pain treatment should be managed by your own doctor.

One of our former patients who was given large doses of morphine for back pain is Lillian. Her severe chronic back pain was cured by implanting gold beads in her back and she was subsequently able to completely phase out years of morphine use. You can hear Lillian tell about her success story here.

Gold implantation is an effective treatment for mild, moderate and severe chronic low back pain. In the Gold Clinic , we are experts in this treatment and have been using the technique since 1996 to treat patients with chronic pain in joints and back. .

  • Many patients treated with gold bead implantation report long-term pain relief or pain freedom after a single treatment.

It's a miracle

It’s amazing – mum has no pain in her knee since yesterday after she had gold in her knee. She’s been out for a walk on the road with a walker without any pain, which she hasn’t been able to do for a long time […] It’s a miracle.

Thank you so much – we are so happy.

Daughter of 92-year-old woman

The advantages of gold bead implantation are that the treatment does not require rehabilitation, sick leave or hospitalisation – unlike back surgery.

Thus, gold bead implantation should always be considered as the first choice treatment for pain relief in patients with moderate to severe back pain.

We have never seens worsening of pain after a gold bead implantation in any of your patients.

Gold bead implantation should always be considered first choice before back surgery in patients with chronic back pain in those cases where there is no need for emergency surgery (e.g. due to a herniated disc).

Operation in the back
includes spinal fusion surgery (dese surgery), surgery for herniated disc and surgery for spinal stenosis. A stiffening operation should always be the last choice of treatment due to the risk of aggravation of pain, prolonged rehabilitation, sick leave and complications.

In some cases, chronic back pain cannot be improved by back surgery. Some people even experience severe back pain after surgery (so-called failed back surgery). This is why doctors are generally reluctant to operate on patients with chronic back pain.

Coping strategies should generally be reserved for patients who have tried all treatments and all options have failed. The purpose of coping strategies is to accept that you are in pain.

In the Gold Clinic, we have many examples over the years of patients who have been abandoned by the public hospital system and offered a course with a psychologist in order to learn to master their pain. Most of our patients benefit from gold bead implantation and some become completely pain-free after just one gold bead implantation. This is true even in cases where the patient has not benefited from all other forms of therapy, including back exercise, massage and strong painkillers.

In other words, gold bead implantation is a good alternative to coping strategies and should be tried before accepting to live with your pain.

Completely pain-free after a gold bead implantation

Three months ago, my husband had a gold bead implantation in your clinic. Immediately after the treatment, his hip pain was gone and has been ever since. He is completely pain free today. We are incredibly grateful.

What can you do - without treatment?

  • Don’t be anxious about using your back. It’s better to move and use your back normally than to be constantly on your guard.
  • You should resume normal activities as soon as possible, even if you are still in pain. Try to relieve your pain with over-the-counter painkillers. The sooner you get back on your feet, the better.
  • Studies have shown that people with back pain who avoid using their back because they are afraid of breaking something in their back are more likely to develop chronic back pain compared to back patients who do not fear using their back.
  • Go to work normally, even if you are in pain. Work usually does not hurt the back. On the contrary, not going to work is generally more harmful. In particular, long-term sick leave does not improve the situation – on the contrary, it increases the risk of never returning to work.
  • If you have back-straining tasks, it may be beneficial to modify your work functions. Discuss your job functions with your doctor and your employer so that together you can find ways to eliminate the unsuitable working conditions.
  • Do back exercises to keep your back functioning properly. Start gently to avoid overloading your back muscles. You must train regularly for at least 3 months before any effect can be seen. However, this does not apply to chronic back pain due to Modic changes.
  • If you have not experienced significant or lasting effects from therapies such as relaxation exercises, acupuncture, massage, chiropractic care, etc., it is important that you change your strategy and try more effective therapies such as gold bead implantation.
  • Live as freely as you possibly can with your back pain. The less you think about them, the less your muscles tense, which is part of your pain. Your back can take more than you think.
  • You can use a pain diary to get an overview of the effect of different types of treatment. A pain diary can give you an overview of what makes your pain worse or better.

Very satisfied

I have been with you about 14 years ago for gold treatment in the neck. This treatment has been of great benefit to me and I am still pain free.
I just wanted to tell you that my back is so much better and that I am almost pain free👏🏻👏🏻
When I’m very active I can sometimes have pain in my hips and a bit down my leg, but otherwise it’s perfectly fine👍

Why we recommend implanting gold beads in the back?

Gold bead implantation is generally an effective treatment in humans with chronic back pain and has a proven long-term effect on chronic pain. The treatment has been used by veterinarians since the 1980s for dogs and other pets with chronic joint pain and has since 1996 been used at our clinic to treat humans with chronic pain.

  • Most of our chronic back patients treated with gold bead implantation experience either significant pain relief or complete freedom from pain after a single treatment.
Gold implantation has a proven and lasting effect on chronic pain.

Usually a single treatment is sufficient, but in a few cases, especially in patients with severe chronic back pain, an additional treatment may be necessary after six to 12 months.

In addition to being an effective treatment for chronic pain, we have never seen any complications or side effects after the treatment, and there is no need for hospitalisation, rehabilitation or sick leave. In fact, gold bead implantation is such a gentle treatment that you can go home immediately after your treatment. Read more about treatment with gold implants in the back here.
